2019 STUDENT ESSAY COMPETITION
Arrupe Jesuit University
The Centre for Ethics in Society at Arrupe Jesuit University, in collaboration with the Jesuit Education Office is conducting its third Essay Competition to encourage ethical thinking and actions on key social issues in today’s world.
Eligibility
Only young people of secondary school going age are allowed to submit their essays. They need not be in school at the time of submission. Every participant is allowed to submit only one entry. There is no fee for entering the competition or for eligibility.
Essay Topic
Child protection and care has become a major social issue in today’s world. What are the major vulnerabilities that children are facing today? Discuss what ethical efforts ought to be made to safeguard children from all forms of abuses.
Format
The essay should be between 1500 and 2500 words. It should be typed using Microsoft Word and in Times New Roman font 12. Please do not submit a PDF copy.
The student information should be as follows:
- Full Name: (as it appears on the National ID or Birth Certificate or Passport.
- Name of School: (Name of Parish for those who are not in school)
- Class Level (From Form 1, 2, 3 up to Form 6)
- Date of Birth
- Email Address
- Phone Number

No hard copies will be accepted. All enquiries should be sent to the email address given above.
Deadline
The last date for the submission of essays is 31 March 2019. The winners will be notified on or before 1 May 2019. The shortlisted candidates will be invited to Arrupe Jesuit University Closing Assembly to be held on 30 May, 2019 at 10.00 am.
Writing Guidelines
The essay should be original work by the participant and it should not have been previously published and should not be published anywhere else. To avoid plagiarism, all references and quotations should be well and adequately acknowledged and cited with footnotes.
Awards
There will be four winners with the following prizes:
First Prize: 300 USD
Second Prize: 200 USD
Third Prize: 100 USD
Fourth Prize: 50 USD
The winners will be notified by email and by phone. All participants will be given due consideration without prejudice to religion, denomination, ethnicity, nationality, race, sexual orientation or gender.

Our health, economy and general well being are directly linked to our relationship to our physical environment. Critically analyze one environmental challenge facing your school, church, village, town or city. What ethical solution would you propose for such a challenge?
In our new world order of the information age, what is the most crucial ethical challenge facing the African child today? How can this challenge be solved?
