Chiedza is produced under the authority of the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Academics. Chiedza aims to publish scholarly articles, short fiction, poems, and book reviews on issues pertaining to philosophy, theology, and the humanities with priority given to those that deal with Africa. While Chiedza welcomes contributions from scholars outside the Arrupe community, most of its contributors are Arrupe alumni who work in different ministries inside and outside of Africa, and students and academic staff currently at Arrupe College. Chiedza gives the Arrupe community an opportunity to share their experiences, ideas and concerns with a wider audience. This is in conformity with the General Norms of the Society of Jesus, which state that "Our Studies should foster and stimulate those very qualities that today are often choked off by our contemporary style of living and thinking: a spirit of reflection and an awareness of deeper, transcendent values" (GN 82). Chiedza is thus an apostolic instrument carried out in the spirit of the mission of the Society of Jesus today. It integrates its contributors into the global thinking community through a critical assessment of regional issues.

It is within this social imaginary that individuals are culturally obliged to understand themselves as sexual beings while living out what such an understanding demands. On this score, it could be said that society confers gender on individuals.
