Arrupe Jesuit University (AJU) welcomed H.E. María Lourdes Sangróniz Guerricagoitia, Ambassador of Spain to Zimbabwe, during a visit that provided an opportunity to explore the University’s initiatives, vision and growing international engagement.
The visit carried particular significance given the Ambassador’s connection to the same region of Spain associated with the life and legacy of Fr Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Fr Arrupe was born in Bilbao, in Spain’s Basque Country, a region whose history and identity remain closely connected to his life and vocation.
During her visit, Ambassador Sangróniz was given an appreciation of Arrupe Jesuit University’s work, including its academic initiatives and broader contribution to the formation of students and the development of society. The engagement provided an opportunity to share the University’s vision and demonstrate how AJU continues to translate the legacy of Fr Pedro Arrupe into its contemporary mission in Zimbabwe.
The connection to Bilbao added a meaningful dimension to the visit. For AJU, Fr Arrupe’s legacy is not simply historical; it remains central to the University’s identity and its commitment to forming men and women for others ,graduates who are competent, conscious, compassionate and committed to making a positive contribution to society.
The Ambassador’s visit also highlighted the importance of international relationships in advancing AJU’s mission. As the University continues to strengthen its engagement with institutions, organisations and partners beyond Zimbabwe, such interactions create opportunities for dialogue, collaboration, knowledge exchange and future initiatives with an international dimension.
